Mrs. Reed's 3rd Grade Roosevelt Class Visits One-Room School House

After a visit to the Cherokee Strip Museum and gift shop, the "scholars," dressed in period style clothing, walked to the single-room schoolhouse with their lunch pails, and were greeted sternly by Miss Dyer who instructed the scholars to separate into lines for each gender before walking single file into the school. walking

The entire class was set in and consisted of a curriculum based on that of 1910. They initially were caught off guard when they recited the old Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the national anthem at the time, My Country (tis of thee) accompanied by the teacher on piano. 

classroom The scholars practiced cursive with a dip pen and ink, cyphering (arithmetic) on slateboards with chalk, readings from McGuffey readers, in addition to discussing history of statehood and geography of the region, while also experiencing punishments, doing chores similar to that of the time, eating lunch items consisting of foods from that period, and playing outdoor games while on the playground at lunch.
